Why cant I write a poem? Why cant I ever get the words to rhyme? Is it that some people just have the talent and some don't? If you have this problem or as a poet do not understand why people ask these questions then stick around..
OKAY! So I have been asked this question so many times over and over 'How do you write these poems?' Well, its easier than you think! Think of it as song writing, remember in every song there is a poem.
First, you find something to sing about, think about that topic and just start writing what comes into mind like emotions or thoughts then you think of a chorus, now in most songs the chorus gets repeated in some point of the song so the title of your song should really be clear in the chorus. Finally you add a bit of different emotions maybe completely different from the last or just that same emotion but stronger in the end and THERE! You got yourself a song! Poetry is just like a song but with a different rhythm, I mean half the poems I write are later on changed to songs because you just need to add a tune and your done.
Alright, so maybe the topic part is tricky but remember a poem can be about absolutely anything so if you want a poem to be honest and full of emotion, this topic has to be important to you, if you know the subject well, then thoughts will just come flying to your head and you'll be ready! If it is something like nature, visit a park or go into your garden for the things you see might inspire a few lines and give you more ideas. But if you still cant think of a topic then just go ahead and start writing a poem, how? Let's play a game that a lot of poets have used in their early stages. This game is called 'Grand Theft Poetry'! So a poem begins with a snippet of a verse or maybe just two lines that seems to be random and the rest of the poem is just written around it. So to get this spark, we play the game.
- Gather about 10 books of poetry by different authors or just print different poems off the internet
- Randomly pick a line from each poem but try to avoid finding the best one you see, just pick the first line
- Put these lines together and try to arrange them into a poem
- By putting two completely different lines together, you might be able to write the rest of your poem around it or it could just give you an idea for your own poem
- Although not all poems need to rhyme, a wide majority of them do, so techniques to make your verses rhyme will be featured in another article!
Save your most powerful message or thought for the end of your poem. As all poets say, the last line is to a poem what a punch line is to a joke. Make your readers think about your poem even after reading it, make them feel what you feel. Try not to explain it, let the reader develop an understanding of your message.
When you have finally put your poem together, listen to your poem, read it out loud over and over. Make sure you learn the rhythm to your poem. Edit your poem, you can fix it up overtime or just rewrite the whole thing still keeping the same ideas you had before.
Be patient to when it comes to poetry writing for it is definitely a skill that improves with practice, just like any other type of writing.
